Jobs-to-be-Done Statement
The Jobs-to-be-Done (JTBD) framework statement format for capturing what users are trying to accomplish, the context, and the desired outcome — used to focus product decisions on outcomes over features.
Syntax
product-owner-ai
When [situation or context],
I want to [motivation or action],
So I can [expected outcome or benefit].
For AI generation:
"Write a JTBD statement for a user who [describe the scenario]. Focus on the underlying goal, not the feature."Example
product-owner-ai
When I send an invoice to a client,
I want to know if and when they viewed it,
So I can follow up at the right moment without seeming pushy.
Note: The JTBD is "timely, confident follow-up" — not "invoice open tracking." This distinction keeps the product focused on outcomes rather than specific UI features.
