Video Format Adaptation Workflow
A workflow for adapting a primary video edit to multiple platform formats using AI reframing tools — including where automation works well and where human review is required.
Syntax

Primary edit: 16:9 (YouTube, desktop web, LinkedIn)
AI-assisted adaptations:
- 9:16 (Instagram Stories, TikTok, YouTube Shorts): Auto Reframe tracks primary subject
- 1:1 (Instagram Feed): Center crop with AI subject tracking
- 4:5 (Instagram Feed preferred ratio): AI crop with review
AI Reframe review required for:
- Multi-subject scenes (AI may prioritize wrong subject)
- Fast-moving content (tracking may lag)
- Scenes with important visual context in frame edges
- Lower thirds and titles that extend to frame edges
Post-adaptation tasks (always manual):
- Lower third and title repositioning for new frame dimensions
- Text overlay adjustment for safe zones
- Pacing review — some cuts work differently at 9:16 than 16:9
- Platform-specific end cards and CTAsExample

Project: 3-minute product feature video. Primary edit 16:9.
AI-assisted adaptations created:
- 9:16 version: Auto Reframe used. Worked well for 80% of sequence. Manual correction needed for 2 multi-subject scenes and closing split-screen.
- 1:1 version: AI crop worked for all but opening scene (important context in left frame edge — manually adjusted).
Manual work for all formats:
- Lower thirds repositioned (3 instances)
- End card rebuilt for each aspect ratio
- Opening title animation adjusted for 9:16 safe zone
Total time for 3 format adaptations: 1.5 hours vs. estimated 4 hours manual. 62% time saving.
