The Semrush Mental Model

Sizing Up Any Domain: Domain Overview & Authority Score

The first query in any investigation. Point Domain Overview at a competitor and read their size, strength, and trajectory in thirty seconds.

Domain Overview is your SELECT * LIMIT 1

Type any root domain into Domain Overview and you get one summary row: estimated organic and paid traffic, Authority Score, number of ranking keywords, a traffic trend line, and the domain's main organic competitors.

You are not looking for detail yet. You are answering one question: is this a giant to avoid, or a peer I can outmaneuver?

Read it in this order:

  1. Authority Score — how hard they are to outrank (0-100).
  2. Organic Search Traffic — estimated monthly visits from Google.
  3. Organic Keywords — how many terms they rank for.
  4. Traffic Trend — climbing, flat, or sinking?
  5. Main Organic Competitors — who else fights for the same terms.

Authority Score, in bands

Authority Score blends link power, organic traffic, and a natural-versus-spammy signal into one 0-100 number. It is logarithmic — climbing from 40 to 50 is far harder than 10 to 20. Rough bands:

  • 0-20 — new or thin sites, low link equity
  • 21-40 — established small sites and local businesses
  • 41-60 — strong niche authorities
  • 61-80 — major industry players
  • 81-100 — global brands (Wikipedia, Amazon, government sites)

Use it two ways: comparing competitors (higher score means a steeper climb) and prospecting backlinks (favor higher-authority, topically relevant referring domains). Never present it to a client as their "Google score" — it is a third-party estimate.

Turn the read into a decision

If the competitor's Authority Score is within ~15 points of yours and their trend is flat, you have a real opening. If they are 40 points above you and climbing, do not attack them head-on — find the low-difficulty gaps instead (the next two lessons).

Key Takeaways

  • Domain Overview is the one-row summary that starts every investigation.
  • Read Authority Score, traffic, keyword count, trend, and competitors — in that order.
  • Authority Score is a logarithmic 0-100 estimate for comparison and link prospecting, not an official ranking factor.
